EMPLOYMENT IS DIGNITY
Women who have special needs children
are more likely to suffer from unemployment
One of the reasons they suffered from unemployment is because there is no childcare available for their child due to stigma. To make matters worse, usually the immediate family is unsupportive and aloof. Even with these obstacles, these ladies fight hard to make ends meet but often they still go to bed hungry. Dignity Designs changes that. We are able to offer these moms employment at the Dignity Designs workshop on campus.
While their children attend Heshima, the mamas are next door making beautiful jewelry and textile products sold in our on-campus store. All our products are made from African materials: for our jewelry we use West African trade beads, cow bone beads, recycled brass beads and ostrich egg shell beads. And for our textile products we use bright, bold African fabrics. Each mother receives a monthly salary and help with health care for herself and her child. Dignity Designs is a place where these mothers feel love, security and dignity.
The Dignity Designs shop in Nairobi is located on the Heshima campus, and it is open Monday through Saturday from 9-5. If you are interested in selling our jewelry in the USA or elsewhere, please contact Tracey Hagman (tracey@heshima.org), and she will send you our catalog.
